Title: Email address thief?

Shadow - September 14, 2008 02:03 AM (GMT)
...This... is not normal. I was busy playing around with my Gmail account, since there's a lot of features I haven't bothered to set up before. I decided to create a second Gmail account for emailing friends in real life, so I could put my real name in the "name" box thing. Confused about combining the two accounts onto my main one, I decided to log into my old Hotmail account and send some test emails.

I had an email from Cbox in there, something to the fact of "hope your Cbox is going well, here's some upgrade info". But it was to a Cbox user called vampirewerewolves. I've never been interested in vampires, I've never been interested in werewolves. I've definitely never made an account by that name.

So I decided to try and log into the account. My password obviously didn't work, but since the account had been set up with my email address, it was no problem changing the password. I felt like I slipped a padlock as I entered the account, but hey, this was made with my email. Is there something not right about that, or is that just me? >O

I looked at the cbox. There was a recent conversation there; the account had only been made a few days ago. I'd never seen any of the people. I posted. "Well, well, this is interesting. This account was made with my email address. I believe it is in my power to delete this cbox? Mmhmm?" Or something to that effect. So anyway, I deleted the entire account.

Now I'm worried. Why would someone use my old email address to set up a Cbox account? Do you think I should be worried about them getting the password to that account and using it? And... my password for that account is the same one I use in a lot of other places. o.o;; Should I be worrying? Should I switch all my passwords? I feel insecure. o.o;;

Hmm... that is odd. I'd feel kinda nervous too.

I guess I'd scan my computer for trojans (you never know) and change some of my more important passwords...

I have like 4-5 gmail accounts, myself... :P

Hmm... well, my virus protection scans my computer every day, and then it puts stuff it finds into a Virus Vault... what I don't get is on the Virus Vault it says "Empty Vault", and I don't know if that means it will erase all the bad files or just empty them out of the vault back to where they came from. o.o;

Haha! Well, if it was a reputable antivirus, I would HOPE that it erases the files. Although it would be pretty funny if it just put them back on your computer after moving them to the vault. Or maybe not so funny to you :P

Anyways, you shouldn't worry too much. He probably doesn't have your password, unless Cbox requires email activation, in which case he WOULD have your password and you can start worrying. Maybe you should check up on that. More than likely he just saw your email on some forums that you haven't gone to in forever and was bored and used it.

Okay... that is very strange. Was your old email "Shadowofthewolves" or something? It might be possible they accidentally typed in the wrong email... o.o

Well, I'd change all my passwords to be secure, and yeah, running a virus scan or something would be a good idea.

They might have either typed in the wrong e-mail address or maybe they just typed in something random and pressed ok. xD My friend used to type in spam at yahoo dot com if he didn't want to give them his real e-mail and no activation was required. =P

Hah, no, not so funny to me. xD; *has already lost everything to a virus once* Though that time I was younger so it wasn't important stuff, I guess...

o.o I should check up on this. *goes to make a random Cbox account* I didn't see anything in the inbox, so... *checks anyway* Edit: It doesn't require activation, but it does send you your information. I looked back, and I did get a letter about the vampirewerewolves box that was created. I must've just looked over it and not thought anything of it...

Was your old email "Shadowofthewolves" or something?
Yeah, it's the same as my current one, just at Gmail instead of Hotmail...

xD Maybe, but "shadowofthewolves" is a pretty specific random... xD

I changed most of my important passwords now. I'll do the rest later, I guess. xD

It seem likely that it was a mistake. Maybe his email is shadowofthewolves100, shadowofthewolf, shadowofthewolves201, something along those lines. If he had found out the password to your email, he most likely would have changed it. I've done that before, not changing someone's password, but typing the wrong address (my email is c.ynda@yahoo.com, I typed in cynda instead. Sorry, whoever that was!).
