Title: The 5th Generation
Description: No, no, it's not coming anytime soon.
Zephyr - January 7, 2008 08:56 PM (GMT)
So. They sure took their time bridging from the third generation into the fourth, didn't they? :P But here we are. If my senses are correct, they'll dawdle on this gen for at least five years before there is any hint that another generation is coming.
Some may ask, will it come at all? I say yes.
The thing about Pokemon is that it's well and truly gripping. It's hard not to become attached to it once you've played the games and met the characters. So as long as there are kids willing to try something new, Pokemon will live on. It's too big of a franchise to just die-- it would be like Nintendo stopped making Mario games. Not gonna happen.
But what about the fifth gen? Hm? When they do come out with 100+ more Pokemon, what're they gonna do? What about legendaries? Do you suppose they're going to try something new? What do you want to see with the fifth gen?
Illegible - January 7, 2008 10:42 PM (GMT)
Discussions like these usually don't work because there'll be losers who say that pkmn is over because it just has to end with the pkgod. Good thing this place is small...
Well, there will undoubtedly be a fifth gen. It's common knowledge that Satoshi Tajiri has around/over 1000 pkmn drawn up. So it is not like they are scratching their heads wondering if they give Krabby a pre-evo. Chances are, there already is one...
Here's what I've been thinking: most single-stages save for legendaries will be part of an evo chain. Maybe Snorlax has a pre-evo (=P). Maybe Absi actually exists (Acanthite for those of you fortunately outta the loop, I hope all of you). Perhaps Carnivine is the first stage of three (actually, it looks like a middle stage to me...). They break the lines to us serially and as they release new methods of evolution. It keeps the players on their toes as to what'll come next. And it's actually a killer idea. Then you always have a remote cxn to past games even though Kliukk may be a weird region of a Japanese island you have never heard of (did you know that the Kanto region actually exists? The name, I mean...).
Ew. Five years. I hope not. I'm not too fond of the Sinnoh dex. Third gen was a bunch to have fun with, and the Sinnoh group just doesn't cut it...Ash has cleared what, two Gyms in the anime (three if I'm uninformed)? That's not a good sign. By the end of the season, he has better at least be through three to ensure we're following the same formula Johto and Hoenn did...but maybe they'll pull something interesting in Tyson Version (the third game if you do not get it...assuming there'll be one...) like the Battle Frontier...
I'm not sure what I want to see or if I'm even looking forward to it. When Veekun (that's the right site, right?) uploded the icons right after release, I was totally playing the guessing game with them as to what they were. Now that was very fun. I got many of them right...except Togekiss (mainly 'cause a)a Togetic evo would be a nightmare and b)it looked like a suitable Mantine evo). First gen was unparalleled. Second gen is sum ed up in the first line of the Johto Journeys theme song =D. Third gen was amazing. You really don't know what you have until it isn't much anymore. Kanto started it. Johto expanded the universe. AG showed you what pkmn was truly about (the anime and games were superb, esp. the BF in both). Sinnoh is, to me, one word. That word is adverse. It's all so different. Team Galactic is always aloof. I'm not sure about you, but Mime Jr. does not give me the same vibe that Cleffa did.
And it's not over yet. It's only a matter of time before we get household appliance-inspired pkmn. Bayleef, oh Bayleef...what will become of you? We don't know. It could go into the bleak world I tried to describe quickly or it may not. For all we know, the punch line has not yet been told. Only time can tell. My Kabutops evo may yet see the light of day...
That's long enough for now D8...
Shadow - January 8, 2008 01:46 AM (GMT)
Hmm. Well, I'm all for another generation of Pokemon. =D Though it will probably be a while before another one is released. As for the "Pokemon is over because the god Pokemon was released", I don't agree at all. So? Mew is the ancestor of all Pokemon; they didn't stop there.
In a new generation, I would love to see more original Pokemon and far less evos and pre-evos of old ones. Someone brought this point up somewhere: it seems to go in a pattern; the first generation was all original Pokemon, the second had a lot of evos and pre-evos, and the third barely any. The fourth had plenty of evolutions and pre-evos; perhaps the fifth will be mostly new Pokemon? Evos and pre-evos are fun, but I think now it's more of a thing for fans to do; it's good to have Pokemon that stand alone, they don't all need evolutions.
I would also like to see less legendaries. Something like GSC would be great, the legendary trio, a legendary for each game, and a "Mew-Celebi-Jirachi" that can't be obtained in-game. =D But I think there's ridiculously many legendaries in the later games. They're cool Pokemon, but maybe they don't all need the legendary status.
Hey, that was longer than I thought it'd be. =D

*waves the red flag*
But, at the same time, how could we live without Latias and Latios? *is using Hoenn as an example* The eon pkmn do not play much ofa part in the games, but they surely have an awesome movie going for them. And, with all of their powers, (even though Latios seemed a less-than-stellar fighter <<) they'd have to get the high stats and one-off status. Ew. I don't like that. Add that to my list; I'd like less one-offs. I know it's a part of gameplay, but c'mon, there have got to be more than one Articuno. We know there is. But yet FR/LG only has one...uh, I digress. Kyogre/Groudon/Rayquaza were a trio upon which the entire plotline rested. They were powerful because Ru/Sa told an epic story. Ooh, another one I have. I never want to see another 'Pkmn of the Earth' like Groudon. *insert footnote** Jirachi was cute and little else. I guess it goes in the bin with Mew, Celebi, and Shaymin. I bet we'll get more cute and unintelligent yet mighty pkmn...the Regis? Do we even know anything about them? Well, I do not, except that some arrogant guy who wears green has all three of them (not to mention there are more than one, or so says the Lucario movie). And then comes Regigigas. They had better not pull a Mewthree on us. Deoxys? I want another Deoxys. They (Tajiri and Sugimori) dwell on Earth too much. We only have, what, six pkmn not native to Earth (Cleffa line, Deoxys, Lunatone, and Solrock)? We need more pkmn from the cosmos...
And Deoxys is powerful 'cause it came from the Black Lagoon. Y' know, many pkmn with powers of a legendary actually balances the game. With the gazillions of Bidoofs, Cascoons, and Nupins Tentacools (weak, useless pkmn), there must be strong pkmn out there, as well. Having five of them seems unnatural to me...
*Zeph, I don't believe it. I just bashed the BoaTH ><...how incredibly depressing...*puts head down*[/post 2]
EDIT: I'm using THAT avy? No way...
Cyndaquil201 - January 8, 2008 02:25 AM (GMT)
I think it would be extremely awesome if they let fans submit their fake Pokemon and gyms and trainers and whatever for a game. That's what I want to happen (although I doubt it ever will).
What I think will happen. There will be 100 or so new Pokemon, maybe some cool type combinations (a fire/water legendary could be very interesting), they'll add some exciting new feature (what if there were minigames? They've had some before, but if there was some area with a dozen minigames that you could either play alone or with someone else, that would be awesome), and that's pretty much it.
The amount of legendaries in each generation has been rising, with five in the first, six in the second, ten in the third and thirteen/fourteen in the fourth (does Phione count as a legendary?). Based on the current pattern, chances are there will end up being even more legendaries in the fifth generation. Not that I want there to be more legendaries, that's just the direction it seems to be heading.
Speaking of patterns, the first generation had 151 Pokemon, the second 100, the third 135, and the fourth 107. Every other generation has just about 100 Pokemon, while the rest have closer to 150. If the pattern continues, the fifth generation will have very roughly 150 Pokemon. Also, every generation with more original Pokemon and less evolutions and pre-evolutions had more Pokemon.
Based on these patterns, I predict that the next generation will have 150 or so new Pokemon, more original Pokemon, and lots of legendaries.
MawileGirl - January 8, 2008 11:30 PM (GMT)
I'm not really sure if I want another gen after this HORRIBLE (*cough* In my opinion..) 4th gen, but I guess, to keep Pokemon up and running. As long as it's not another 4th gen style clone. Maybe get it back to Hoenn quality.
I think they should have taken more time thinking up the 4th gen cause the plot stinks, the Pokemon names stink (I mean seriously.. Abomasnow and Licklicky? Plus a BUNCH of others..), I just wish we could go back to Hoenn style and everything would go back to normal.
P.S. I HATED Arceus being the PokeGod. Ho-oh would'a made a much better one.

I don't know how you can't like Arceus though. :/ He's totally awesome; he's got to be in my top three Sinnoh legendaries, and I like the Sinnoh legendaries. (The other two up top are Palkia and Shaymin, just FYI.) But, uh, I like Arceus. He's cool, and certainly deity-like, and he really shouldn't be catchable at all but whatever. Anyway Ho-oh, while awesome, sort of leftme unimpressed. Okay, big shiny rainbowy bird. What else?
Illegible just made about fifty jillion Amber references. xD And of course I'm the only one that gets them. Anyway, Illeg, the BoaTH is merely the creator of Kosek's landmass. But, uh... who created him, anyway? People, just so you know: Every weakness he points out in the Pokemon games, he covers in Amber. :P

I don't think so. For one, their names have changed over time. Also, their designs have changed. Legendaries have gotten far more impressive looking, Pokemon's designs have become more creative (see: Buizel, then look at Seel), and the pattern has been adapted and developed from. Pokemon are made along with their region, with ones for each area. They can't just draw out all the Pokemon, then make a region to go around them.

Eh.. he just looks.. I dunno. At least they should have just said it was a legendary, but let people find out in the anime or something. Like, I thought that Ho-oh was the god, and I would have taken Arceus if they had just let us figure it out.

Word. The Gold/Silver legendary format was way better, legendary pokémon have lost their importance in the games, in my opinion, they should at least be harder to catch; no one brags about catching a legendary, people do brag about their frontier symbols.

If you read your own post more carefully you'll notice that the amplitude gets thiner: 151 - 100, 135 - 107. To a difference of 51 pokémon it goes to a difference of 28, the next generation will probably be around 130 - 115 and then stop in a 125-125 average according to that pattern.

I agree, the 4th gen was very weak all around, particular highlight to the lack of originality in practically everyting from new pokémon to the basic and plain plotline. I would prefer to have another 4th gen-like version than nothing, though, so I hope pokémon sequels continue. I would say get back to Kanto quality instead of Hoenn: the only pejorative remark I can say about the R/B versions is that the designers must've been high when they created the sprites.
| QUOTE ("Zephyr") |

That's a fallacious way to think: you picked up a plain looking pokémon from 1st Gen and matched it up to a creative-looking pokémon from 4th gen, saying 4th gen is more creative. From that point of view I could say "(see: Kangaskhan, then look at Bidoof)" to prove exactly the opposite point.
---
Enough quoting: I believe a 5th Gen would have to be for a sort of PS3 or Xbox platform, I'm sick of playing this at 2D and by turns. A sort of real time battling system like Final Fantasy XII would be great, in my opinion.
Another probem is the game being so easy: how can a kid get to be the best pokémn battler in the world in less than a year when in-game people that train their pokémon since they were 2 years old have level 40 pokémon or so? Make the champion have level 90-100 pokémon and make real trainers to face you, I'm tired of making a pokémon grow a level every five minutes.
More accurate and coherent role-playing would serve the games good, aswell: how can a Zubat use Mean Look when it has no eyes? How can a fire pokémon be frozen? How can Water Sport weaken fire attacks but not conduct electricity better? Stuff like that bug me...

Kanto had plain Pokemon and a not-so-interesting plot. It was all original, yes; it's hard not to be original when you're the first. As for the fourth generation having unoriginal Pokemon, most of them were original. I can name some Pokemon that were not original, but there were some in Hoenn that were unoriginal as well.

They just seem as such because the animals they are based off of with their typing make a plain pkmn. The fishies are all unoriginal, then, as they are shapes with colour splattered on them. I'd say that Giratina is less original because it looks like something out of an M-rated FPS (I'm making a generalisation; I've never actually touched an M-rated game...).)" to prove exactly the opposite point. --- Enough quoting: I believe a 5th Gen would have to be for a sort of PS3 or Xbox platform, I'm sick of playing this at 2D and by turns Welcome to pkmn. xD I s'pose that's what Battle Revolution is for.... A sort of real time battling system like Final Fantasy XII would be great, in my opinion. Another probem is the game being so easy: how can a kid get to be the best pokémn battler in the world in less than a year when in-game people that train their pokémon since they were 2 years old have level 40 pokémon or so We could play the logic game all day with pkmn. The entire thing is logically unsound. As my chemistry teacher would say, you'll just have to get over that =P.? Make the champion have level 90-100 Red was close...and methinks competitive battling fills that void... pokémon and make real trainers to face you, I'm tired of making a pokémon grow a level every five minutes. Then give them a Rare Candy and they'll grow a level in twenty seconds...[/reallybadjoke] More accurate and coherent role-playing would serve the games good Since I'm short on time, I'll exlcude my speech on target audiences, but just read what I said earlier to kinda sum up what'd be here...however, I do agree with you..., aswell: how can a Zubat use Mean Look Think Masquerain: its wings serve as 'eyes'. when it has no eyes? How can a fire pokémon be frozen? How can any pkmn be frozen? Body temperature is above water's melting point (obviously)...apparently Ice type attacks freeze the pkmn so fast as to perfectly preserve them except for getting beaten around by more attacks (and eventually defrosted)... How can Water Sport weaken fire attacks but not conduct electricity better? Stuff like that bug me...

I totally agree there. You're not the only one bothered by that.. D; I want thirds of the pkchow 8D..

| QUOTE (Squall @ Jan 10 2008, 05:00 PM) | | QUOTE ("Cyndaquil201") | | Speaking of patterns, the first generation had 151 Pokemon, the second 100, the third 135, and the fourth 107. Every other generation has just about 100 Pokemon, while the rest have closer to 150. If the pattern continues, the fifth generation will have very roughly 150 Pokemon. |
If you read your own post more carefully you'll notice that the amplitude gets thiner: 151 - 100, 135 - 107. To a difference of 51 pokémon it goes to a difference of 28, the next generation will probably be around 130 - 115 and then stop in a 125-125 average according to that pattern.

I noticed that, but it was late at night and I was too tired to care much. xD

She was most likely just using an example. Overall, designs have become more creative. Oh yeah, remember the GB limitations. They cannot have overly intricate designs or else they would not make the platform...for all we know, Giratina took a Neopet transformation as the technology got fancier (some old Neopets look rather different from their current incarnations).
| QUOTE ("Squall") | | QUOTE ("MawileGirl") | I'm not really sure if I want another gen after this HORRIBLE (*cough* In my opinion..) 4th gen, but I guess, to keep Pokemon up and running.
|
Kanto had plain Pokemon and a not-so-interesting plot. It was all original, yes; it's hard not to be original when you're the first Ack, someone beat me to it <<.... As for the fourth generation having unoriginal Pokemon, most of them were original. I can name some Pokemon that were not original, but there were some in Hoenn that were unoriginal as well. Eww, Cascoon...

(I'm tired of quoting so just check the previous posts if you don't know what I'm talking about)
@Cyndaquil201: I personally dislike most of the 4th gen pokémon designs; in my opinion, there's only about a handfull of creative pokémon I could name in the 4th gen but I guess that's a matter of tastes, so whatever xD.
---
@Illegible: I don't watch the anime or whatever you're talking about so I had no idea Pinsir was on "episode 2" or why and how that changes anything.
Simple error, let me rephrase that: "Pinsir, Sabley, Mawile, Absol and Murkrow and Misdreavus which are now crossed of my list (I enjoyed how Mismagius turned out ^_^)"
I understand why the game difficulty doesn't change, I just said the games would be more enjoyable if they did IMO.
What does Lati@s being stronger than Tentacool have to do with them being legendary? Koffing is stronger than Tentacool too and it's far from being a legendary.
They both have 600 total base stats like other strong dragons, Salamence, Dragonite and Garchomp, nothing that special when there are legedaries with 680 (not counting Arceus' 720).
What's wrong in saying fallacious? O_o In case you're saying it's not a word or that it doesn't fit in that context look for yourself: fallacious. If that's not it I have no idea why you made fun of it...
I agree: Seel and Bidoof were meant to be plain-looking pokémon but that doesn't make them less plain.
Do you see any eyes in Zubat's wings?

Aha, I said they had powers, not they were powerful (which they also are). They can go invisible. They're sorta speedy. Obviously, they have psychic powers. And, oh yeah, sight sharing...the legendaries have high stats because of the powers they have. Sure, if the game had such powers, gameplay would be different. Then there'd be no catchable legendaries, which is one thing upon which it all rests... They both have 600 total base stats like other strong dragons, Salamence, Dragonite and Garchomp, nothing that special Don't forget their unique typing. Latias is a BF weapon, and I'm sure Latios is better due to his emphasis on attack. when there are legedaries with 680 (not counting Arceus' 720).

Okay, I'm not gonna plunge headfirst into this debate; I'm just going to be nitpicky here. Pokemon were NOT all invented at the same time. It's simply not possible. But your analysis of spriting in the GB games is flawed.
See, sprites in RBY and GSC were limited by technology, yes. But only just. Sprites back then were limited to only four colors: white, black, and two other colors. Obviously, this limited them graphically, but not at all design-wise. That's what the Sugimori art is for. They could have portrayed Giratina in its full splendor in the art, and done a simplified version for the games, with two shades of purple for the color scheme. It's doable. Besides the color limitations, the sprites can be as detailed as they want. Yes, RBY sprites WERE abysmal. Whatever. They remedied that in Yellow.
Still, you cannot say that they had all the Pokemon planned out from the beginning. The Kanto legendaries, placed side-by-side with the Sinnoh legendaries, don't even seem like the same creatures anymore. (That's a good thing. I like all the legendaries, actually. ^_^ (Except the regis. But nobody likes the regis.)) But point is: they've been changed by time. There's no good explanation for that other than they make the Pokemon progressively as time goes on.
And yes, Cynda, I heard they did take fan submissions for Pokemon at least once. Steelix was a fan-made concept. But don't bet that it'll ever happen for you. :/

I would personally hate it if they changed the battle system. The turn-based battle system lets you focus on strategy, which plays a huge part in the Pokemon games.
If they were to change the system to something non-turnbased, then there would be different button combinations for different moves, things to draw on the touch screen to do certain things, buttons to press to do other things. You'd get all tangled in the fighting aspect of it, pushing buttons as fast as you can to win. Sure, there could be some strategy, but it'd pretty much be limited to pulling off really super fast moves and combining them quickly with others.
Really, the turn-based battle system makes Pokemon what it is, and sets it apart from other games. ^^
