Title: Change forums...?
Kronakitty - November 4, 2007 11:10 PM (GMT)
EDIT: Nevermind, disregard all this. XD I'm deciding we shouldn't switch forums, since there really isn't a good enough reason to do so.
Before you start freaking out, let me just say that it's not a definite yes that the forums are going to change.
This all originated from the whole validation problem with the spambots and their ceaseless registering (which unfortunately still hasn't stopped. >_> It was during a conversation with Ev-chan, my sister site <3, that she suggested I try out phpbb 3.0.
I installed it and made a skin (it didn't take long o.o;) and I'm wondering whether or not we should move there. Does anyone want to move to a phpbb3 board hosted on the EV server...? It'll have some new features (some just different) and we'll likely get away from the spambots. The downside is that phpbb3 is still a release candidate and not completely stable at the moment, although it's working well and the final version should come out soon.
Now, I don't care much either way, but tis up to you guys. :3 If no one wants to move, then I'll incoporate the new skin to this forum.
The URL of the phpbb forum is here:
http://www.eonlightvalley.com/forumSo yeah, the URL really isn't that different. XDDD Feel free to register and try it out if you want~ I don't mind.
....*sigh* This all brings back memories of our dear old SMF forum that got beaten up by hackors... ;___; Well, let's hear what you say!
IceMasterX - November 4, 2007 11:21 PM (GMT)
I like it... I dun really mind if we switch, as long as it's still EV. XD
I love the new forum just as much as this one... though I'll have yo get used to it since I'm so used to invisionfree... but not a hard transition. ^^
I joined as HailZtorm ^^
EDIT: I can't even find how to get an avatar. xD
Kronakitty - November 4, 2007 11:30 PM (GMT)
Yeah, it took me a bit to get used to the admin cp and everything, too. >_>;
To change avatars go to your user cp, click on edit profile, and then select Avatar or whatever it says below Edit Profile. Then type in the URL of the avatar, and poof. :3
IceMasterX - November 4, 2007 11:40 PM (GMT)
thankies. Don't know why I didn't notice that before. XP XD
Is there a code you can put into it so that it will have an automatic avatar-resizing thing like invisionfree?
Shadow - November 5, 2007 12:12 AM (GMT)
I like the idea. But, there's a few things I want to ask first.
One. Where's the RPG on the new forums? =O Is it going to be transferred?
And two. If we do move to the new forums, can these forums still stay open, so we can go back and read threads and stuff? You could disable new registrations and disable people's ability to post to keep it as just an archive of all the old threads. That'd make it tons easier for going back and retrieving stories and such.
Kronakitty - November 5, 2007 12:32 AM (GMT)
@IceMasterX: I don't think so... it should work for 100x100 avatars. If it doesn't, just put in your avatar dimensions.
@Shadow: Oh yes, this forum will definitely be open! I'm not sure about the RPG, because I really don't want to make everyone start over. @_@;; But if I had to move it, I'd probably make it so everyone only needs one adventure topic and it'll be moved throughout the areas as they progress. ^^ It'd also be a good chance to change stuff... like add a purpose to the alliance or something. And if someone doesn't want to start over and we're transferring the RPG... I guess they'd just have to make a new topic and start where they left off?
There's also the option of keeping the RPG here. The only problem's that it'll be a pain logging on and off in different places.
Shadow - November 5, 2007 12:38 AM (GMT)
Yay! ^^ I think I still have an unretrieved story on the original IF forums. XD;;
Yeah, it wouldn't be good if everyone had to start over... but then, maybe it would be the easiest way, if transferring everything is the other option. Maybe... maybe you could have the option to either start over, or make a new topic and start where they left off, like you said?
Maybe. That would be a pain, though. Hmm.
MawileGirl - November 5, 2007 02:48 AM (GMT)
Hm.. I like this kind of forum better than those types, but if we have to at some point, I'll be ok with it.. but I'll miss Leafeon and the skin a lot..
Maybe, just maybe, this could stay open as a all rpg forum? Then the rpg stuff can stay here and everything else goes.
Vee - November 5, 2007 03:37 AM (GMT)
Whatever works, I s'pose.
In reguards to the RPG, I'd start over. It's not like I have that much to redo, anyway.
I'll probably register sometime in the next day or two.
Kronakitty - November 5, 2007 12:49 PM (GMT)
Invisionfree is good but I was told it's easily prone to spambots and hackers. I don't think this is true because EVF has never been hacked, though.
Yeah, giving members the options is the best way. And we could have a test period where over a week or so members can post at the new forum to see which one they'd prefer. ^^
As for the skin, I can remake the Leafeon one over there. =O
Zephyr - November 5, 2007 08:33 PM (GMT)
No.
I'm sorry, but I do not want to change the forum. I see little reason to do so, besides the spambots. Either way, they would flood the new forum as well as the old one. But this forum is functioning fine.
Also, restarting means that everybody's postcounts and user data are gone. Kablooie. Clean slate. Everyone's adventures in the RP will also have to be restarted (not that anyone ever got really far, but that's still a good few weeks until it's all caught up.)
Third, I have no knowledge of how to admin that type of forum. I have expertise with Invisionfree controls, but I simply do not know how to operate a different forum host.
Fourth, I do not like that skin. I'm not at all fond of pink skins, and it's not particularly easy on the eyes either. :/ The skin on this forum is much more enjoyable.
I wish you had checked with me before making this-- if I am to carry over my admin duties to another forum, I should at least know in advance. At this point, I am against moving to the new forum. It does not seem very well thought out.
Kronakitty - November 5, 2007 09:32 PM (GMT)
Sorry, Zephyr. D: I was going to PM you first, but then I thought it'd be more fair if EVERYONE's opinion was heard.
Yeah, I know pink isn't going to please everyone. I think the colors beautiful personally, but I knew someone was going to say it's ugly. That's why I'll probably remake this skin over there if in the end the answer's yes.
As for the spambots, I don't know if they're flood that one too, but I seriously cannot even express how annoying they are. Once I didn't check the validation page since I hadn't been here in about a week, and what do I see? 400 'members' ready for validation, among only two or three actually seemed to be real members. Going down the checklist and click, click, clicking... it was hell of a torture. v_v
Yeah, it isn't well thought out. I guess I was having a bad week, and seeing the validation page for the 100th time seriously blew my head off. >__>;;
Either way, I'm in no way letting this situation go unhandled. If switching to a new forum can't be agreed on, then let the Divine bring a response to defeat the Spambots of Ebil! D8 *drama*
... *crickets*
Shadow - November 5, 2007 10:04 PM (GMT)
Hmm... is the main reason for the switch to tackle the spambots? *logs into old AMC forums to look at administration options* Do the spambots still get in when you require new members to validate their email address?
Kronakitty - November 5, 2007 10:05 PM (GMT)
For some reason, it doesn't seem to be happening in every Invisionfree forum. I have mine on Admin Validation, and the validation lists are always FILLED. I've tried banning spambot emails, but it doesn't work. v_v
But yeah, that's the main reason. I was suggested phpbb 3, so I looked at their features and stuff and it seemed cool so I guess I sorta grew on it. Now that I think about it, I guess it wasn't really a good choice to spring everything on you guys. DX
Shadow - November 5, 2007 10:10 PM (GMT)
Hmm, have you tried User Email Validation, though? Or maybe adding a Spam Poison thing to the bottom of the forums would help.
Kronakitty - November 5, 2007 10:13 PM (GMT)
I think I tried it before, but it didn't quite work because I wouldn't have switched to admin validation otherwise... hmm.
Well, I'll try it again. ^^
I believe I added spampoison before, too, and it didn't work. D:
Shadow - November 5, 2007 10:17 PM (GMT)
Hmm, that's true. Ya, maybe it could help. Then you could set it so the accounts that aren't validated in the next week or two are deleted. Hopefully that helps... =/
Aww, it didn't? =O Hmm, it actually might not be working so much on my site, either... XD;;
Kronakitty - November 5, 2007 11:55 PM (GMT)
Gaah it doesn't work. x___X Three spambots just registered in under a few hours! O_O
Zephyr - November 6, 2007 08:50 PM (GMT)
What happened to the image validation? D: That might kill 'em off.
Anyway, if we set it to PM validation, this way we can also weed out the members that don't read the rules. ^_~ I'll set up a forum mask for real-people guests so they know what to do.
And while we're at it, we can set up all the defenses against spambots that we know of. Spam Poison, even if it doesn't work. Probably the reason we're getting to many bots is because this is a domain name and is linked to an extremely active site that gets tons of hits per day.
Kronakitty - November 6, 2007 09:30 PM (GMT)
I don't know what happened to the image validation. >_>;; It disappeared. D8
Hm... I never thought about it that way. Ah well. D:
Shadow - November 6, 2007 09:52 PM (GMT)
Hmm, Invisionfree did used to have that, didn't they? Maybe we could request it or something. =D
*glances at the Spam Poison* Hello, Spam Poison. Why don't you work on my website? X_X But, hopefully it'll stop at least some of the bots here...
IceMasterX - November 6, 2007 10:26 PM (GMT)
Hmm... so you are still having a problem with bots on this forum at this exact time? I dun care about switching forums, I'll live, I just... aw well that would sound selfish. New forum ftw!
...
You disabled it! =O
Kronakitty - November 6, 2007 10:31 PM (GMT)
Ehh I'm deciding we shouldn't switch... it's kind of pointless. ._.;
