Sorry it took so long to get this chapter done.

Chapter 10: To Catch a Thief! Vs. Drowzee!

Ryo ran down the road outside Cerulean City with Growlithe and Mankey not far behind. He thought Dratini was too tired from the battle the past day to be out. He stopped for a moment to let his too Pokemon catch up. As soon as the two Pokemon caught up, a woman dressed in blue in a large blue motorcycle drove by, heading in the same direction Ryo was going.

"Wonder what's up?" he muttered and he, Growlithe, and Mankey began to follow. By the time he caught up with her, she was already at a large stone house with a large hole blown out of it. The woman stood at the hole as well as a bald man.

"What happened?" the woman asked.

The man laughed. "What do you mean what happened? There's a hole blown out of my house! A member of Team Rocket waltz right in, stole my prized TM, and broke out!"

"Calm down, Russ." the woman said in a soothing voice.

Ryo returned his two Pokemon back into their balls and moved in close enough to hear. 'A TM? Why make a big fuss about that?' he thought, and then he approached the man. "What attack did the TM hold?"

The man, Russ, glared at him then said, "Why don't you go play with your Pokemon, boy. This is grown-up talk."

Ryo gritted his teeth. "My name isn't 'Boy', its Ryo, and I may be young, but I'm still a skilled trainer. I already have two badges!"

"Two badges?" Russ laughed. "You probably just won those from luck."

After that was said, Ryo curled his hand into a fist, remembering what Don said. "Wanna bet?" he muttered.

"Calm down, both of you," the woman said. "At least this boy is trying to do something right instead of complaining."

Russ blushed, then sighed. "My apologies, Officer Jenny. I guess I lost my temper." He looked down at Ryo and continued. "The TM that was stolen was Dig. The thief stole it at least twenty minutes ago, so he couldn't have gone too far. Your better get a start if you wish to catch him."

Ryo grinned and nodded. "Thanks. I'll try to bring it back as soon as I can." He said and he began to run back down the road.

Noon soon came and Ryo took a break. He pulled out his Pokegear to check his location. "Route 5, huh?"

Soon his stomach began to growl. He sat down, pulled his backpack off, and released Dratini, Growlithe, and Mankey and pulled out five apples he recently bought before leaving Cerulean City, and another bar of chocolate.

"Draa!" Dratini cried as it saw the fruit on the ground. It squirmed over to it and began to consume it quickly.

After they ate their snack, Growlithe began to bark at something in the distance.

"What do you see?" Ryo asked, looking at the same direction. Then he saw it. A several meters away was a man dressed in black. From what Ryo could make out, he seemed to be too focused on something that he didn't pay attention to the barking Growlithe.

Ryo jumped to his feet and pulled his backpack back on. The four of them ran to the man as fast as they could, until they were a yard away. The man didn't seem to notice. He sat on a tree stump fiddling with small machine.

"Definitely and Team Rocket member," Ryo whispered. The man's hat was laying beside him, which the same red 'R' as the people in Mt. Moon. Ryo raised his voice. "Are you the one who stole the TM from that man in Cerulean City?"

The man didn't respond. Then, after a minute he stopped with the machine and glared up at Ryo. He put his hand into his pocket and pulled out a Pokeball. "Machop, take care of these pests."

Ryo took a step back when a grey Pokemon that looked almost like a human, with the exception of a tail and three crests on his head appeared from the Pokeball's flash of light. "Mach!"

"What is that thing?" Ryo muttered and he pulled out his Pokedex and scanned it.

Machop, the Superpower Pokemon. It hefts a Graveler repeatedly to strengthen its body. Its muscles never cramp however much it trains. It uses every type of martial art and lives in the mountains away from humans.

'A Fighting type, eh?' Ryo thought. "Let's see what its got! Go, Growlithe!"

Growlithe hopped in front of him, giving a low growl.

"Use Ember!" Growlithe shot several small flames at his opponent.

"Machop, dodge and use Seismic Toss," the Rocket operative said.

His Machop flipped over the small flames and grabbed Growlithe's hind legs and began to spin him around, and soon released him.

Growlithe gave a howl as it flew through the air and crashed against a tree.

"Finish it off, Machop. Use Dynamic Punch." the Rocket operative said.

The Machop gave a low laugh and ran at a quick speed towards Growlithe, and before Ryo could tell him to dodge, the Machop's punch hit the Puppy in the side with great force, knocking him out.

"Return," Ryo said and in a flash of red light, Growlithe was back in his Pokeball. "He didn't even stand a chance. Go, Mankey!"

Mankey ran in front of Ryo, ready to avenge his friend. "Key!"

"Mankey, use Mega Punch!"

Mankey charged at with its glowing fist raised. Machop made no attempt to dodge. The punch landed on Machop's chest. "Machop, return," the operative said, not caring if his Pokemon was injured or not. "Go, Drowzee!"

In a burst of light, an odd creature appeared. It had a tapir-like head and its body, arms, and head had yellow fur, as the waist down were dark brown.

Ryo scanned it in the Pokedex.

Drowzee, the Hyponsis Pokemon. It can tell tell what people are dreaming by sniffing with its big nose. If one thinks they had a good dream, but are unable to remember, it's possible it was eaten by a Drowzee.

Ryo shuddered. 'A Psychic type?' he thought. 'Mankey might not do much, but we have to try.' "Mankey, use Mega Kick!"

Mankey ran at Drowzee and raised her glowing left foot, but before she could get a hit on Drowzee, it took a step back to dodge.

"Drowzee, use Psybeam," the Team Rocket operative said.

"Drowz," Drowzee raised its trunk and shot a purple beam.

"Mankey, dodge!"

Mankey dove out of the way of the beam.

"Mankey, use Fury Swipes!"

Mankey ran towards the Hypnosis Pokemon at its full speed with its paws raised and slashed it three times.

"Drowzee, use Hypnosis!"

Drowzee's eyes began to glow and a small ring of light flew to Mankey, but it had no effect.

"Thanks to Mankey's Vital Spirit, she can't fall asleep," Ryo said.

The Team Rocket operative didn't respond.

"Mankey, use Brick Break!"

Mankey leaped towards Drowzee with its paw raised in the air and punched the Hypnosis Pokemon in the chest. Drowzee fell to the ground, knocked out.

The Team Rocket operative sighed and returned Drowzee into its Pokeball.

"Alright Mankey!" Ryo yelled raising his fist.

Mankey was breathing deeply and a moment later, Mankey began to glow in a blinding light. Her body began to change. Her body grew, her paws turned into large fists, and her feet became larger. The light faded and a new Pokemon stood where Mankey did.

With the light clear, Ryo could see all her features. Her arms and legs were brown and had black rings in her wrists and ankles and her body was tan. Ryo scanned her in his Pokedex.

Primeape, the Pig Monkey Pokemon. It grows angry if you see its eyes and gets angrier if you run. If you beat it, it gets even madder.

Ryo noticed small text at the bottom of the screen.

'Primeape learned Rage.'

He grinned, then looked up at the Team Rocket operative, who was walking the opposite direction as him. "Wait!" Ryo yelled. He ran up to him. "Why did you steal that TM?"

The Team Rocket operative looked down at him. "I was going to teach it to my Pokemon to break into Saffron City and try to take down the Team Rocket boss, Giovanni. The only problem was I couldn't do it without anyone noticing. Here," he pulled a brown disc out of his pocket. "Take it. By the way, tell that old man to catch a Diglett. They learn that move anyway."

Ryo took the disc and placed it in his TM case. "Thanks."

The Team Rocket began to walk, then said, "The secret path to Viridian City is not too far from here. Just look for an abandoned building by the gate to Saffron."

"Thanks," Ryo said again, and the two went opposite directions.

Chapter 11: Don Returns! Vs. Farfetch'd

Two hours passed since Ryo went through the path from Cerulean City, and he was now in Vermillion City. The city was bigger than the past two he had visited, and was full of tourists visiting to ride on S.S. Anne. Ryo made his way through the city, trying to find the port. He soon approached a long line of people trying to board the ship. The Pokeballs on his belt shook violently. His three Pokemon were excited.

Ryo looked around, hoping someone he knew was in line. No one was there. He took a step forward as the line progressed and ended up bumping into a large man with spiked up dirty blonde hair and was dressed in a brown jacket and green jeans.

"Watch where you're going, kid," he said. The man studied Ryo carefully. "You're a Trainer, aren't you?"

Ryo grinned. "Yep! The name's Ryo."

The man laughed. "You seem a bit young to be one. How old are you, runt?"

"Only ten," Ryo muttered. He looked around again, to find any one of his friends. Again, none.

Again, the man laughed. "I'm Theo," he said. "I've been training my two Pokemon for the past five years."

Ryo looked at him. "You're fifteen and you only have two Pokemon?"

"Yup," Theo said proudly. "Check em out!" He threw his two Pokeballs into the air and released a grey, spiked covered rhino, and an amber color, armored mouse, one like the one Ryo saw in Mt. Moon. "Meet my Rhyhorn and Sandshrew."

Ryo looked at them. "If you've been training them for five years, shouldn't they of evolved by now?"

"Well," Theo muttered. "I haven't gotten around to that yet. I've been EV training them."

"EV?" Ryo was lost.

"EV training is when you train your Pokemon so have stronger stats," Theo said. "Anyway, if you're all talk, let me see your Pokemon."

Ryo's grin came back. He pulled his three Pokeballs from his belt and released Dratini, Growlithe, and Primeape. Each gave a cry of joy as they were released, but were soon disappointed that they weren't on the boat.

Theo looked at them each, dumbfounded. "How did you get something as rare as a Dratini?"

"It was my starter," Ryo said. "My grandpa gave it to me, saying he got it from a friend."

"Stole it more likely," Theo said darkly. "Dratini so hard to find, they are almost considered Legendary. And besides, those who usually are able to catch one are elite trainers. Ones like the Elite Four's Lance and Johto's Clair. A rookie trainer such as yourself shouldn't be able to just start off with it."

Ryo's anger rose. Not at Theo, but at himself and his grandpa. 'Why did he give Dratini to me then?' he asked himself. He looked down at the blue and white serpent, who looked at him with a worried look.

Hours later, they were finally able to board the ship. They both returned their Pokemon to their balls and climbed up the stairs onto the deck. Ryo felt too tired to explore the ship. He went into the cabin halls and searched for his room with the ticket Bill gave him. "Three-twentysix..." he murmured continuously, until he found the room.

He unlocked it with the key he received when he showed his ticket to the checker and dropped his bag beside the small bed and lay down. He released his three Pokemon from their balls and let them rest for a moment.

The thought of Dratini stayed in his mind for a while. His head ached painfully as the word 'why' flowed through his head. Then he felt a tugging on his arm. Dratini was biting on the end of his sleeve, as if trying to get him up. He pulled his sleeve away and petted his head and rubbed his fan-like ears.

Dratini slithered up onto his lap and rested his head on Ryo's chest. "Dra," it cried softly. Soon Growlithe hopped onto the bed and lay down beside them, his tail wagging, and soon followed by Primeape, who sat by the bed, giving light snorts. Ryo smiled.

But soon they were disrupted by a knock on the room door. Growlithe and Dratini hopped off the bed as Ryo stood up and opened the door. Ryo smiled widely as he saw Nick leaning against the the opposite wall.

"How did you know I was here?" Ryo asked.

"I checked the guest list," Nick said. "Your name was written under someone's who was crossed out. Guess they were kicked off the ship." Ryo laughed and told him the story of Bill.

Nick laughed along with him, until he saw Primape. "So, your Mankey evolved."

Ryo nodded and rubbed Primeape's head. "She evolved when we were on our way here. We battled against some member of Team Rocket. It turned out that he was trying to take it down by stealing a TM containing Dig to break into Saffron City."

Nick looked at him. "If you just got here, I'll take it you haven't battle the Gym Leader-Lt. Surge-yet," Ryo nodded. "Well, I'll give you a tip. Teach Dig to Growlithe. When I battled him, he used a Magnemite and a Raichu, so a Ground-type attack will be perfect with a Pokemon that came defeat a Steel-type Pokemon like Magnemite, which is weak against Fire attacks."

Ryo sat down on the bed and pulled the TM Case from his bag. Attract, Water Pulse, and Dig were the only TMs he had. He pulled out the dark brown disk and placed it into the end of a case, were it began to spin. He picked up Growlithe and the Puppy Pokemon watch the disk spin. Moments later, he learned Dig.

Ryo's stomach growled as he put the case away. He hadn't eaten anything since the morning. Nick laughed again. "I heard there's a buffet on the deck. If we hurry, we might be able to get something before it all runs out."

Ryo and his three Pokemon agreed and the group ran to the crowded deck. Nick was right. A long table full of food filled the center of the deck. Ryo hungrily filled four plates of food and ran to the edge of the deck. He sat cross-legged and placed three of the plates on the ground for his Pokemon and his plate on his lap and they began to eat.

But, as they ate, Ryo noticed someone he wished he would never of seen again. There stood Don, with his Scyther standing beside him, both were surrounded by younger trainers. Then Ryo remembered the words Don said when they first met. His hatred filled him again, but soon vanished as Dratini looked at him again, worried.

Then Ryo realized that he was noticed. But it wasn't him Don was really looking at. It was Primeape. He approached him, the crowd of younger trainers following. "So, you got yourself a Primeape. You give up with your Dratini and Growlithe? Usually, I just release the Pokemon that I find useless." The other trainers laughed.

"My Pokemon are like my family," Ryo said. "I would never think of them as useless. Even if they weren't the strongest Pokemon, I would still hold on to them, no matter what."

"Then prove it to me. Battle me here and now." Don said. He pulled out a Pokeball and in a burst of light, a duck-like Pokemon holding a leek appeared.

"Alright then, Primeape," Ryo said. "Let's do this!"

Don laughed. "Go Farfetch'd! Use Cut!" Farfetch'd gave a quack-like cry and flew at Primeape.

"Primeape, use Rock Tomb!" Ryo yelled. Primeape slammed her fists together and shot a large amount of stones at her opponent, but the Pokemon was too quick and dodged. Farfetch'd then slashed its leek at Primape in the chest, knocking it out.

"I hope you know," Don began, "when I beat you, this will be my 50th straight win."

Both Ryo and Primeapes anger rose. "Primeape, use Rage!" A vain popped out of Primeape's forehead and she slammed her fists together.

"Prime!" she yelled and charged at Farfetch'd in great speed. She tackled it to the ground and then jumped back, and began to charge again.

"Farfetch'd, use Aerial Ace!" Don yelled. Farfetch'd launched into the air and dive bombed towards Primeape at a great speed.

"Primape, try to dodge it!" Ryo yelled.

Don laughed. "Aerial Ace is an aimed attack. It can't miss!" Farfetch'd hit Primeape in her chest, knocking her down.

"C'mon, Primeape, try to get up," Ryo said. Primape struggled as she got to her feet. The vain on her forehead grew larger. "Use another Rage!"

Primeape ran towards Farfetch'd again, this time faster then before and instead of tackling, she punched Farfetch'd in its cheek. The duck-like Pokemon fell to its back in pain. "Now Primeape, finish it off with Mega Punch!"

Primeape's fists began to glow as it punched Farfetch'd in the chest with great force, knocking it out. Don's eyes widened. "I lost?" he muttered weakly as he returned Farfetch'd into its Pokeball. "Me?" he glared up at Ryo, then muttered to Scyther, loud enough for Ryo to hear. "Scyther, use Quick Attack."

Then, faster then Ryo could see, Don's Scyther flew at great speed and knocked him in the chest as hard as it could. Ryo's back hit the guardrail on the side of the ship and he flipped off, falling head first into the water below. Gasps ran through the crowd of people as they ran to the edge.

Nick and Ryo's Pokemon ran to the edge, pushing people out of the way and looked down. Nick pulled a Pokeball from his jacket and released a large red, black, and white goldfish with large lips and a horn on its forehead into the water. A Seaking.

"Seaking, find Ryo!" Nick yelled, and he turned to Don as his Seaking dived into the water. Nick ran to him and grabbed him by the collar and held him as high as he could. "Why the hell did you do something like that!"

Don said nothing and slapped his hands off. He walked to the edge of the boat and raised the Pokeball in his hand. "Get lost!" and in a burst of blue light, Farfetch'd was free and flew into the setting sun in the west.

Seaking's head popped out of the water with Ryo's arms wrapped around its horn. "Seaking, bring Ryo up with Waterfall!" Nick yelled. The goldfish launched into the air with a trail of water underneath it and dropped Ryo back on deck.

Ryo began to cough up water. Dratini, Growlithe, and Primeape ran to his aid. Soon his eyes slowly opened. Dratini sat in front of him with his worried eyes fixed on him. He turned to Don, who was walking away. Dratini slithered after him angrily, then opening his mouth, he released a large blast of orange light, which hit Don in his back, sending him flying.

Nick stood dumbfounded. "That was a Hyper Beam!" he muttered.

Don's back was steaming from the blast. His Scyther was just as dumbfounded as the rest of the crowd. Ryo used all his strength to stand up and looked at Don. Without a word, he returned Dratini, Growlithe, and Primeape into their Pokeballs and ran to his cabin as quickly as possible, trying not to make a scene, Nick not far behind.

As he ran, he saw a figure leaning against the wall holding his backpack. Theo. "I saw what happened," he said. "Whatever that jerk did wasn't right. I have the right mind to report him to Jenny."

Ryo shook his head. "The guy's an idiot. He only sees his Pokemon as a piece for a game."

Theo chuckled softly. "About what I said earlier, about you and your Dratini, I'm sorry. I mean, anyone like that kid was doesn't deserve to even have a Pokemon of his own.'

Ryo took his backpack from him and slipped it on. "It doesn't matter. Hopefully he won't be messing around people like me again anytime soon."

"By the way, where are you heading?" Theo asked as he, Ryo, and Nick who now caught up with them left the ship.

"First, I'm going to the Pokemon Center to rest until tomorrow, then I'm going to challenge the Leader."

Theo grinned. "Do you mind if I tag along for a while?"

Ryo looked from him, to Nick, then back. "Of course you can. But only-"

"But on one condition," Theo cut in. "We must first go through the Diglett's Cave as soon as possible. I hear there's a treasure hidden somewhere in there. And then after that, if you're heading to Lavender Town, we should go through the Rock Tunnel."

Ryo was lost again, but then decided to stick with it. "Alright," he agreed. "After I get my third badge, we go find that treasure in Diglett's Cave, and then we go through the Rock Tunnel to Lavender Town."

Nick laughed and put his arms around their necks. "And while you do that, there's some training I have to get done, so I'll be leaving after I see your Gym battle, Ryo."

Ryo laughed lightly as the three walked towards the Pokemon Center, leaving the S.S. Anne behind them.

Here's the next chapter. The results of the second battle are pretty obvious I'm afraid....

Chapter 12: Vermillion Rhapsody! Vs. Raichu

Ryo woke up with Growlithe sleeping over his legs and Dratini sleeping beside him, over his right hand. Primape was still asleep on the top bunk, still an old habit. With his free hand, he rubbed the sleep out of his eyes, then patted Growlithe's head.

Growlithe soon woke up and hoped off his chest and stretched on the floor as if he were a cat, releasing a great yawn. Dratini soon woke up too, except from a knock on the door, giving a spray of water in Ryo's face from the surprise. Ryo rolled off the bed, barely missing Growlithe, then stood up and answered the door. There stood Shannon, with her Larvitar sitting happily on her shoulder.

"What are you doing here?" he asked.

"Nick told me that you were going to battle Lt. Surge today," she said. "He also told me that happened yesterday with Don."

Ryo didn't say anything. He wanted to forget everything that happened last night. But he knew he wouldn't be able to. "Have you beaten Surge, yet?"

Shannon laughed. "No. I battled him a day ago and lost. All three of my Pokemon were wiped out." she rubbed Larvitar's head. "I'm going for a rematch tomorrow. But before that, I wanted to see you battle him."

Ryo sighed and rubbed his still aching head. "Is Nick up? What about Theo?"

Shannon shrugged. "Nick's been up. He's been talking to some large guy in the cafeteria."

Ryo grinned. "That's Theo. I guess I'll see you at the cafeteria."

Shannon nodded and he closed the door as she left. He quickly washed up and got dressed. He woke up Primape, who jumped at the touch and hit Ryo in the shoulder before she realized who it was. She gave a yawn and jumped out of the bunk and began to do arm stretches. He pulled his backpack on and he and his three Pokemon left the room and met with Shannon, Nick, and Theo in the cafeteria, where they and their Pokemon were eating breakfast.

Ryo noticed a new Pokemon of Nick's that he didn't see before. A large, purple butterfly with large red eyes. Ryo pulled out his Pokedex and scanned it.

Butterfree, the Butterfly Pokemon. Butterfree has a superior ability to search for delicious honey from flowers. It can seek, extract, and carry honey from flowers blooming over six miles away.

He sat with his three friends as his Pokemon ate with Nick's Venomoth, Beedrill, Seaking, and Butterfree, Shannon's Larvitar and Lickitung, and Theo's Rhyhorn and Sandshrew. Ryo knew why Shannon's Gyarados wasn't out; it was too large for one, and if it were to get upset, the entire Pokemon Center would be destroyed.

Ryo looked at the plate of food his friends had saved for him and began to eat in silence. "So, Ryo," Theo said, breaking the small silence. "Do you have any strategy against Lt. Surge?"

Ryo swallowed a mouthful of food and said, "From what Nick said, his Pokemon were Magnemite and Raichu. I was planning on using Growlithe for both. I'll use Primape if my plan failures."

Shannon looked at him. "When I battled him, he defeated all my Pokemon alone with an Electabuzz."

Ryo stared at her curiously. "Which is?"

She sighed and pulled out her Pokedex. On the screen was a picture of a large, yellow creature with black stripes. It had a tiger-like tail and tufts of hair stuck out on the center of its head, in between two small lightning rod-like ears.

"None the less," Nick said. "Growlithe's Dig attack should work against both Raichu and Electabuzz, no matter which one he uses."

Ryo finished that last of his food and finished a glass of water. "Well, none the less. I'm sure I'm into an interesting match."

With that, he returned they returned their Pokemon into their balls and left the Pokemon Center and began to head to the Gym, west of harbor. The way the gym looked was like a junkyard with a small factory-like building in the center. Ryo opened the door and the four of them went in.

The building seemed empty and abandoned. "Don't let your guard down," Nick said. "they tried to pull this when I first came."

Ryo gulped and looked around. He walked through the darkness with his arms out, until he ran into a barrel. He felt around the barrel in hope to find something of use, but he couldn't find anything, until his finger hit a switch on the side. A light turned on and revealed a door on the other end of the room. The door was blocked by a sheet of electricity.

Ryo looked around the room. Every few feet was another barrel. "You must find the second switch," Shannon said. "It turns the electricity on the door off." Ryo nodded and looked at the surrounding four barrels. He found a red switch on the side of it. With that, he pressed the switch and the sheet of electricity vanished.

As Ryo approached the door, though, it burst open on its own. "Welcome, challenger!" Ryo took a step back. A large, muscular man with blond hair that was pointed in every direction and dressed in dark green camouflage jumped out from the other room. On his jacket were four Pokeballs. He took one off.

"Welcome to the Vermillion City Gym!" he said, his voice echoing through the building. "I'm Lt. Surge, the leader of this Gym!" he tossed the Pokeball into the air and released a small, robotic-like magnet Pokemon with one large eye in the center of its metal body. "This will be a three-on-three battle, and I'll start with Magnemite!"

Ryo pulled out his Pokedex and scanned it.

Magnemite, the Magnet Pokemon. Magnemite uses antigravity to stay suspended. It appears without warning and it discharges Thunder Wave and similar moves from the units at its sides.

Ryo grinned and pulled out a Pokeball. "Go, Growlithe!"

"Good choice, Ryo!" Theo called. "Because Magnemite is a Steel-type, it is week against Fire-type moves!"

Lt. Surge grinned. "Magnemite, use Metal Sound!"

"Mag..." the Magnet Pokemon groaned and it released an echoing sound of scraping metal. Everyone except Lt. Surge dropped to their knees with their ears covered. Growlithe gave a howl of pain.

"Growlithe, use Ember!" Ryo said. Growlithe opened an eye and shot multiple small flames at Magnemite.

"Magnemite, use Double Team!" Lt. Surge commanded. Magnemite's eye began to spin and multiple images of the Magnet Pokemon appeared around Growlithe, showing how fast it was moving to dodge the attack. "Now use Lock-On!"

Magnemite's eye stopped spinning and it began to focus on Growlithe. "Use Shock Wave!" Electricity began to charge around the two magnets on both sides of Magnemite and formed into a large ball of electricity. It released the ball and it ricocheted around the room, then towards Growlithe.

Ryo tried to think of a plan as quickly as possible. From Lock-On, the attack can't miss. "Growlithe, use Dig!"

As fast as he could, the Puppy Pokemon began to dig into the ground, breaking through the steel flooring, dodging the electric attack. A moment later, Growlithe broke out of the ground behind Magnemite. "Now use another Ember!" Ryo yelled. Growlithe shot more small flames at Magnemite, knocking it out.

"Return," Lt. Surge said as Magnemite was absorbed by the Pokeball's red light. "Go, Raichu!" A large, mouse-like Pokemon appeared in front of the Gym Leader with a look of triumph on its face. It had two long, black ears, a long tail with a lightning-shaped end, and two yellow pouches on its cheeks. Ryo scanned it in his Pokedex.

Raichu, the Electric Mouse Pokemon. The evolved form of Pikachu. If it stores too much electricity, its behavior turns aggressive. To avoid this, it occasionally discharges excess energy and calms itself down.

Ryo looked at Raichu carefully, then remembered the girl he saw in Cerulean City who captured a Pikachu. He quickly lost his train of thought when Lt. Surge yelled a command.

"Raichu, use Mega Punch!" he yelled. Raichu launched into the air with its glowing fist raised.

"Growlithe, dodge it!" Ryo yelled. Growlithe slid out of the way as Raichu punched a large dent into the metal ground. "Now use Bite!"

Growlithe pounced at Raichu with its mouth open and teeth showing. "Raichu, Double Team!"

Like Magnemite, duplicates of images appeared around Growlithe, making him stop in his tracks. Ryo looked at them carefully. "Growlithe, use Odor Sleuth!"

Growlithe began to sniff the ground, trying to pick the real Raichu's scent, then he looked up at Ryo and barked. "Growl! Growl!"

Ryo grinned. "Use Ember!" Growlithe ran towards the real Raichu and shot another blast of flames. Raichu flew across the ground, but quickly retaliated.

"Raichu, use Thunder Wave!" Lt. Surge said. Raichu shot a blast of blue electricity from its cheek pouches towards Growlithe. Growlithe fell to the ground paralyzed. "Now, finish it off with Mega Punch!"

Raichu launched into the air again and raised its fist. Growlithe tried to escape, but the magnetic force from the electricity held him on the metal ground. Raichu punched the Puppy Pokemon in his side with great force, knocking him out.

"Growlithe, return!" Ryo said and returned Growlithe into his ball. "Go, Dratini!" Ryo said. In a burst of light, the serpent appeared.

"Dratini, use your Thunder Wave!" Ryo said. Like Raichu, Dratini shot a blast of blue electricity at Raichu, paralyzing it. "Now use Twister!"

Dratini began to spin its tail rapidly, creating a small tornado, and with a flick of its tail, it sent the small tornado at Raichu. Raichu flew across the gym and slammed into the wall. Ryo grinned.

"Don't get cocky," Lt. Surge said. "Mega Punch isn't anywhere close to Raichu's greatest attack." as Ryo's grin faded, Lt. Surge started. "Raichu, use Volt Tackle!"

Ryo's eyes widened as the Electric Mouse engulfed itself in a large blast of electricity and with great speed, it charged at Dratini. "Dratini, get out of the way!" Ryo cried.

Dratini pushed itself out of the way, just as Raichu ran passed. Lt. Surge's expression didn't change. Raichu turned on its hind legs and tackled Dratini before it make another move. Dratini slid across the floor and looked up at Raichu, who was hit by recoil.

"Finish it off with another Volt Tackle!" Lt. Surge said. Once again, Raichu engulfed itself in electricity and charged at Dratini.

"Dratini, ready a Dragon Rage!" Ryo yelled. Dratini inhaled a large amount of air, and when Raichu was only a foot away, he released a large burst of green fire. There was a large explosion and smoke surrounded the battle field.

Ryo and Lt. Surge desperately tried to see who the victor was. No one was able to see. Ryo's heart thumped against his chest as the smoke began to clear...
