Title: In that shadow
Kronakitty - May 21, 2007 10:22 PM (GMT)
So, have you ever had someone who's always better at whatever you think you're best at, someone who you're always in the "shadow" of, someone who's always getting the attention and you just want to beat that person no matter what? :3
For me, there is very few people in the real world that I know of because most of the people at my school are just really good at sports, girly stuff, and I'm basically #1 artist/writer known and I like it that way (arrogant as I am xD).
But there is this other kid living in this other city who my mom always goes "well, look how well HE'S doing" or "he got so-and-so score on the ACT/SAT -- you should do better!" at. He's a year older than me, and he has this huge stack of trophies at his house. And it's annoying how my parents always make him a "role model" to compare me with. @_@ I hate being compared like that.
Well, I'm not that big on "beating him" because quite frankly, I don't care that our learning paces are different, but I hate always being put in his shadow. -_-;; (Fortunately, it hasn't happened lately.)
And there's someone else, too, who I refuse to mention. Dx

Arrgh, being in someone's shadow is bad enough, but being forced to be compared to someone you have little in common with is downright painful.
Here, try this: next time your parents bring him up, remind them in any way you can that it makes no sense to compare you to them because he's older and you have two completely different learning styles. You can scream, run into your room and slam your door, have an emofit, anything just to get your point across. Once the initial idea is established, remind them of it every time they start to mention him and hopefully they will stop.

...pretty much yeah. >> My twin brother. TT

Ahaha I have tantrums and emofits like... all the time. XD;; It's amazing how different I am at home than I am in public. o.o I swear, I need to get my temper down before high school. >_<;
@Rapiido: TWIN brother? =OO

Ah, I know how you feel. =/ There used to be someone like that for me with writing. If that made sense. My parents never compared me to him; it was just kind of a thing in my mind, but the same concept. I think.
Ugh, isn't it annoying when parents try to compare you to other kids? >_>
Kronakitty - May 23, 2007 12:23 AM (GMT)
^ Totally. D< And you'd think parents of all people will just try to encourage you to do your best. XDD And not compare to other little kiddies. @_@

Your parents shouldn't do that. By what I've seen, you're a very smart person, Kronakitty, and your parents shouldn't do that to you. It's wrong. I know it would be hard, but if it's that big of a deal, I would ask them to talk to me about it.
Edit: Do you even really KNOW the guy?
Kronakitty - May 24, 2007 07:11 PM (GMT)
^ Ya, but Asian parents are pretty harsh and a lot want their children to be "perfect"... or, as perfect and high-ranking as they can be. >_>
And no, I don't really know the guy. I've probably said two sentences to him all my life -- I've been at a few parties in his humongous house cos my dad works for his dad.
